Foreign Matters

 

This installation examines how colonial myth-making operates in historical accounts of white frontier Australia. In 1836 Eliza Fraser survived shipwreck off the coast of Queensland, and was taken in and cared for by the Badtjala People, Traditional Owners of K'gari (Fraser Island). The work is indebted to the discussion and research contained in Larissa Behrendt's "Finding Eliza: Power and Colonial Storytelling" 2016, University of Queensland Press. Found, constructed and ready-made objects and printed digital images.
